Bear pursuit proves precipitous
The sun is beginning to set as we approach the opening in the trees. It's the steep side of a slope that we must cross before we can reach the trucks and return to civilization. There's a thin set of snowmobile tracks that mark the path across this thin shelf on the side of a mountain -- the tracks we first made coming into this mess. There's no room for error.Maybe we tempted the gods when we said, "Man, I hope we don't drop off the side of that."Or maybe it's just our day. It's not the worst we've seen. But it might as well be. Our will to keep moving is almost shot.Justin Clapp, trophy game biologist for Wyoming Game and Fish, revs the engine on a small SkiDoo he is riding and sets off for the opening.Dan Bjornlie, also a trophy game biologist for Game and Fish, follows on a larger snow machine.
Wow! Woods wallops Cink for another World Golf title
Alas, this putt spun around the lip and stayed out. Having raised his putter over his head, Woods cringed and let the club fall through his finger, and both players laughed and tapped fists. It was that moment Sunday at Dove Mountain that illustrated where Woods is on the world stage of golf. His expectations have never been higher. His game has never been stronger. Woods closed out Cink on the next hole with a wedge that climbed over a bunker and spun back to 2 feet, his 14th birdie in 29 holes in his 8-and-7 victory, the largest margin in the 10-year history of the tournament. It was his 63rd career victory, moving him past Arnold Palmer into fourth place alone on the PGA Tour's career list. He won for the 15th time in these World Golf Championships, earning more money in 26 starts than Tom Lehman has earned in 438 starts in his PGA Tour career.
Montoya sets fastest lap of Las Vegas testing
LAS VEGAS --Juan Pablo Montoya paced testing Tuesday at Las Vegas Motorspeedway, going 186.761 mph in his Dodge to post the fastest lap of the two-day session. Montoya's mark in the afternoon session bettered Kyle Busch's fast lap of 183.580 on Monday and Carl Edwards' mark of 184.256 in the Tuesday morning runs. In all, 12 drivers bettered Edwards' morning run, including four Toyota drivers as the automaker's fleet continued to impress in preseason testing. AJ Allmendinger was second fastest to Montoya, running a 185.752 in a Camry fielded by Red Bull Racing. Tony Stewart was 10th fastest in a Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing, David Reutimann was 11th for Michael Waltrip Racing and Busch was 12th for Gibbs. The strong showings come after two weeks of solid runs in Daytona for Toyota, which struggled in its first season of Sprint Cup competition last year.
