THE EXPAT LIFE

My kids miss home and with each visit back to the U.S. it is becoming more difficult for them to accept the fact that they live in China and we have no plans to move back soon. The first two years here it wasn't an issue -- we had nice, extended visits back to the U.S. and then returned, with no drama. But coming back last summer was tough on them and the most recent trip only served to reinforce their feelings. It is, I assume, our new paradigm.

Last August, we left immediately after my nephew's bar mitzvah, with all the families still gathered in New Jersey, and they wanted to stay. Jacob cried hard the night before our departure. His cousins Sarah and Emma (18 months and two and a half years older than him, respectively) tried to comfort him with reassuring words and encouragement about his present life.

AUTOS: Chrysler to extend Plastech contract

Also, Bloomberg News reported Friday that Magna International Inc., Canada's largest auto-parts maker, may get the biggest share of $200 million in work that Chrysler LLC wants to take away from the bankrupt supplier.

The automaker plans to move proprietary molds and dies that make 121 plastic parts from Plastech to a Magna unit, according to a Chrysler planning document.

Lear says restructuring costs to continue

Lear Corp., the second-biggest maker of automotive seats, said it expects restructuring-related expenses "beyond the current year" as customers cut back production.

The company made the comment Friday in an annual U.S. regulatory filing. Lear estimated it has paid $386 million in such costs since 2005.

"In light of current industry conditions, particularly in North America, we expect to make significant restructuring and related investments beyond the current year," the Southfield-based company said in the filing.

And here we have a composer who repeats familiar sounds, repeats familiar feelings, and even repeats some of the familiar music that (except for Agon) his audience already likes. He touches on safe and tasty motifs from popular culture, even while his Greek themes make his music seem like art. Happily for sponsors, its style makes it sound like advertising. Even if he never gets to the Cleveland Orchestra, he's bound to get somewhere." NewMusicBox 08/01

RATTLE AND BPO COME TO TERMS: "Sir Simon Rattle has been confirmed as the artistic director of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, ending months of wrangles over the prestigious appointment." Rattle wanted the job, but held off accepting until the Berlin city government agreed to higher pay for the musicians and independent-foundation status for the orchestra.

Apple's attention shifts to Mac as iPod growth slows

In the last few weeks, its biggest news has been the deals it's made with movie studios for streaming content over iTunes, and its having deflated the bulk of a notebook computer to a razor-thin profile. Didn't Apple used to sell those little song gadgets?

A public corporation always puts its best foot forward for its quarterly earnings report, and in that case, Apple Inc. is no different. But when a seasoned performer has become accustomed to always entering the stage with his right foot, as many have trained themselves to do for whatever reason, you take notice when one enters the stage with his left.

Defar runs 9:10.50 Two Miles World best in Boston

Tonight was a bit more of a time trial," he said. "We wanted to run fast, and we did. Of course, the big thing is to win races, and I did that too."

"It was a good time, and I'm happy with it. I'm running as well as I've ever done, in about the same shape as I was this time last year. I just need to keep a lid on things, keep turning the screws, and keep getting ready for Beijing."

Mottram found himself shadowed early in the race by New Zealand's Commonwealth Games 1500m champion, Nick Willis, but Mottram's relentless pace proved too much for Willis over the full distance, as he faded badly in the last kilometre. "I like running the last few laps alone," joked Mottram. "Nick was clipping my heels early, so I kept pushing until he wasn't there any more."

Dibaba fast, but unhappy

Tirunesh and Ejegayehu Dibaba rewrote the season list for the women's 3000m as Tirunesh attempted to set the meet record at that distance.

Small towns disappearing across North Texas prairie

Plans include indistinguishable brick homes with slight variations of color every few units. Manicured lawns and towering wooden fences will ensure privacy. The Froelicks say they can't imagine living in another mundane residential living space. These neighborhoods remind them of the place they came here to escape.

Corral City offers the Froelicks something they say they could never get in Belmont or any other newly planted development: a community. In Corral City, neighbors share their homes and their lives with each other. They keep their RV doors open at all hours to celebrate the good times and mourn the hard times with their neighbors.

The community spends weekends barbequing at the town park, living it up at the town's Halloween party or sharing cherry tomatoes from their potted gardens.

K-State notes

-Key play: Kansas State guard Jacob Pullen was on fire from the outset. His three-point basket got the Wildcats on the board, and he nailed three more just like it in less than five minutes. The second one gave K-State a lead it never relinquished.

-Key stat: 12-0. How did Oklahoma State make a game of it after falling behind by 16? The Cowboys' bench made a dent in the Wildcats' advantage, outscoring K-State's bench 12-0. Reserve Terrel Harris led the charge with eight points.

Second half

-Key play: K-State's Michael Beasley broke open a game that was getting interesting with a three-point basket that extended the Wildcats' lead to 51-40.

-Key stat: 16. That's how many offensive rebounds K-State collected. It was crucial because the Wildcats shot only 36.8 percent after the break.
