Scott Riggs missed the season-opening Daytona 500, but is 19th in points, ahead of 14 drivers who have competed in all 32 races run to date. But had Riggs made Daytona, it wouldn't have made a lick of difference in his points position now - he's 184 points out of 18th place, meaning he would have had to win the Daytona 500 to move up in the standings. Today's race purse is $6,030,505, an increase of $842,159 over this race last year. I spoke briefly today with Andy Graves, who used to be general manager at Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates and before that worked at Hendrick Motorsports for 10 years. Graves has been hired by Toyota to oversee its Nextel Cup launch next year, a massive undertaking. Graves will meet the press next Friday at Texas Motor Speedway. The weather here in Atlanta is perfect clear and cool.

Nick Robinson's Newslog
“I will put the nation's interests first. I will put principle before party. I will be open and honest. Thus do those seeking power today seek to persuade those that can confer it upon them that they are worthy of it - that they are, in short, different from most politicians." How Machiavelli would laugh at this. All this week Radio 4 has been serialising a new translation of Old Nick's most famous work, the Prince, as its Book of the Week (you can hear them here) along with a few introductory words from me about the grandaddy of all spin doctors, special advisers and strategists. If you'd rather read than listen they're re-printed below. Introduction to the first extract of The Prince “I will put the nation's interests first. I will put principle before party.
Heikki Kovalainen gives Lewis Hamilton a run for his money
Kovalainen posted the fastest lap time in yesterday's winter testing session in Valencia, which featured nearly every team's 2008 cars. The Finn, who joined from Renault last month, clocked his best time at 1min 11secs from 92 laps raced at the 2.49-mile Cheste Circuit track. He outpaced Hamilton by more than a second in front of 22,000 fans. Ferrari's Felipe Massa was second with a time of 1:11.662, ahead of team-mate and world champion Kimi Raikkonen with 1:11.850. Hamilton - testing for the first time this week - was fourth with a best time of 1:12.076 from 115 laps driven. .
From prizes to celebrities, stores pull out stops to spark slow sales
CINCINNATI — Retailers trying to brighten up what looks like a drab period for shopping are rolling out eye-catching packaging, celebrity tie-ins and contests for everything from Hannah Montana tickets to an African safari. Their challenge: to offset expected low shopper traffic over an extended holiday season by luring consumers into their stores and keeping them there long enough to pick up some extra gifts. .
ASM not perfect, but still working
I would be rich if I received a dollar every time I heard something along the lines of "The Associated Students of Madison are useless." My favorite has probably been "ASM accomplishes nothing and steals students' money." Wow. As the current legislative affairs chair of ASM, I am rendered speechless at these ignorant and often cruel comments. How and why are the students on this campus embittered and unwilling to trust their student government? Call me naà .
Racing notebook: Manzanita, Canyon Speedway
Ricky Stenhouse Jr. will be competing fulltime on the ARCA RE/MAX series in 2008 for Roush Fenway Racing, but first there's a matter of pride at Manzanita Speedway. Stenhouse, 20, of Olive Branch, Miss., was the star of last February's inaugural Copper on Dirt at Manzanita Speedway, pulling off a double victory in the USAC Silver Crown and sprint-car features. It started him on his way toward winning the USAC Rookie of the Year award. He'll be back at Manzanita Friday and Saturday, attempting to defend his title in the Silver Crown race. Two-time defending series champion Bud Kaeding of Campbell, Calif., headlines the challengers. .
Veillette indicted on 15 counts in deaths
LEBANON — A Warren County grand jury on Friday, Feb. 15, handed up an indictment that could bring the death penalty against Michel Veillette in the stabbing of his wife and the killing of his four children who died in a fire at their house. The grand jury returned 15 counts, under various statutes, against Veillette, 34, of Mason, said county Prosecutor Rachel Hutzel, whose office will now try to convince a jury that Veillette deserves the death penalty. .
Bulk of States Back Cluster Bomb Ban, Organisers Say
What do you say to something like that? I think I'm a fairly realistic, if progressive person. That vote offends me deeply. It is also offensive that I have this in common with the Ridiculous Right; a nearly cellular level distrust for H.R.C.. "The right hand doesn't know, what the FAR right hand is doing." Hillary Rodham Clinton To paraphrase Adlai Stephenson regarding Richard Nixon, "He could chop down a Redwood tree and make a speech for conservation from the stump." .
