Supercars that will spoil you

Buyers of ultra-high-end cars have traditionally fallen into one of two camps: performance or luxury. There are the thrill seekers, strapped into million-dollar Bugatti Veyrons, zooming down the autobahn at 200-plus mph. And then there's the chauffeured set, lounging in the backseats of Rolls-Royce Phantoms while sipping glasses of Cristal.

Judging by the latest crop of supercars to hit the market, automakers are betting more big-spenders fall somewhere in between the two extremes. You no longer have to choose between ultra-fast acceleration and hand-stitched comfort. In some new models, you get the best of both worlds.

No car embodies the Goldilocks approach better than Fiat's Maserati GranTurismo, a supercar that made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show. A sportier update of the four-door Quattroporte, the Pininfarina-designed GranTurismo is more compact and more curvaceous than its predecessor, with a wider grille.

Amberjac Projects Battery Systems Help JCB Streamliner to 350mph

(CSRwire) Amberjac Projects Limited, a company in the United Kingdom, wish to congratulate Andy Green and the JCB Dieselmax team on their momentous 350mph world landspeed record attempt success. Amberjac Projects developed and built the battery systems and chargers for the JCB Streamliner. The team decided not to use an alternator to provide electrical power due to the reduction in engine power caused by an alternator under high load. The electrical systems, fuel pump, turbo waste, and ancillary equipment demand a very high current draw from the battery system for a sustained period over the speed runs. The environment that the battery system had to survive would be considered an abuse condition for many battery systems and the safety problems associated with traditional Lithium Ion batteries precluded their use.

Are IBM and Apple Ganging Up Against Microsoft?

IBM and Apple, competitors in the early years of the PC market, traditionally have not worked closely together. One reason for the distance between the two companies is the small overlap between Mac users and the big corporate customers that commonly buy products from IBM. Now, the companies appreciate that "we have a lot in common," IBM spokesperson Mike Azzi said. "We're going to cross-pollinate."

Detroit Concept Cars Show Considerable Promise

Auto show concept cars are often radical design studies that end up being tamed before they are produced (if they are produced at all). But the crop of concepts at this year's North American International Auto Show in Detroit shows plenty of promise, especially crossover utility vehicles (CUVs) like the Cadillac Provoq and Ford Explorer America, which use alternative fuel sources to improve efficiency and lower emissions. The Detroit auto show is held at the Cobo Center and is open to the public January 19-27.
