Replica guns seized from collector

You poor sorry b@stards. What has happened to you? Your grandfathers ran an Empire, and here you all are cowering at plastic, fake, guns. The only good aspect is that I've been able to buy three of the very fine Enfield rifles you are all suddenly scared of. .

Tuned into reading

Wicklund's "I CAN READ" program, which includes a CD, activities and now a DVD, uses fun songs to teach 13 high-frequency words such as "I," "we," "go," "the" and "like." When students learn these basic words, they can devote more attention to harder words to complete sentences.

Wicklund tested the program in three Iowa City kindergarten classrooms in 2004-05, quizzing students on their ability to read and write the 13 words before and after using the "I CAN READ" method. By spring, most of the kindergartners could read all 13 words and many students could write most of the words, Wicklund said.

Students whose teachers used the program had higher scores on the Reading Recovery Observation Survey, which tests letter identification, writing vocabulary, dictation and text reading level, than previous students who did not use the program, Wicklund said.

The family courts and why Paul McCartney should reveal all

Family courts in the UK are shrouded in secrecy, with many decisions taken behind closed doors. The rationale behind such decisions is rarely made public.

But given that transparency breeds accountability, organisations resistant to transparency effectively place themselves in the firing line.

In light of this, tentative proposals are being considered to make family courts more open. But would this really be a positive move? There have been two judicial reviews of the family court system in the past two years. The first concluded in May 2006, with the then constitutional affairs minister Harriet Harman declaring: "In this day and age, it is hard for people to value what they cannot see. It is hard for people to have confidence in something that is closed. It is impossible to defend a system from accusations of bias and discrimination if it operates behind closed doors."

Judicial goings on are filtered to the public via the press and the initial media response to this was positive.

Facebook rocks the vote

CNNU campus correspondent April Daley is a freshman at Northwestern University. CNNU is a feature that provides student perspectives on news and trends from colleges across the United States. The views expressed in this article are not necessarily those of CNN, its affiliates or the schools where the campus correspondents are based.

EVANSTON, Illinois (CNN) -- Rock the Vote uses music and popular culture to get young people involved in politics, so it's probably no surprise that the group is using Facebook to reach plugged-in voters.

Fashion Meets Technology: Welcome to the Future of PCs

REDMOND, Wash., Jan. 7, 2008 -- Three icons of the fashion world recently stepped out of the world of couture and catwalks to judge another sort of fashion show. Like most fashion shows, they paid close attention to the different designs colors, curves and overall aesthetic appeal of the models. Some models were slim and square, others were more rounded. Some were clad in leather, and a few were lacquered. It sounds a bit odd, but in this case, the three "fashionistas" weren't judging clothing, they were judging computers in a high-tech fashion show staged at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The PC industry is paying more attention to the aesthetics of their products this year as consumers are increasingly asking for more stylish, unique PC options to fit their lifestyle.

Andover 'D' overwhelms Pentucket

ANDOVER — Andover High coach Jim Tildsley was quick to note the key to victory last night.

"We played great defense," said Tildsley. "To hold a team to 16 points through three quarters is pretty impressive. And they scored eight points right away."

Behind that stifling defense, the Golden Warriors, the No. 4 team in Eastern Mass., downed No. 15-ranked Pentucket 44-27 in a battle of the two top teams in The Eagle-Tribune Fab Five rankings.

"This was a very good win for us," said Tildsley. "The seniors really stepped up, and we hit some key shots. (Meghan) Thomann was 5 for 8 from 3-point range."

Locked in a defensive struggle through two quarters, Bentley-bound Thomann (team-high 17 points) gave her Golden Warriors the lead with seconds left in the half when she knocked down a 3-pointers to make the score 17-14.
